After hearing about the devastating February 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires, Owen drove down from Brisbane to offer his services with the Yea Relief Centre. He volunteered there for a period of two weeks whilst the centre was still operating.He liked Yea that much that he decided to stay on. In 2010 he purchased his first machine and started up Grade Ability, which in 2014 was renamed Dowling Excavations.

He works along side his father-in-law Alan.
